Arts + Literature Laboratory presents The Whimsyland Series by Poornima Moorthy, an exhibition organized by the community curation project, LAB^4, from Tuesday, July 8, 2025, through Saturday, August 29, 2025.
The Whimsyland Series – through the use of realistic, pattern-filled imagery and vibrant, colorful landscapes – is a drawing series that conveys a place where one feels unconditional love, acceptance, and protection. There is an invisible thread that binds us: love, empathy, curiosity. These are the magical forces we can’t see.
In her work, Poornima Moorthy captures that magic in the world around us. By listening and observing, she reveals how magic lives in ordinary moments—hidden marvels we don’t always notice, feel, or think about. We often go about our daily lives without seeing the wonder and awe right in front of us and within each of us. It’s easy to get caught up in the routine.
For Moorthy, drawing is a form of meditation. Using the Procreate app on her iPad and an Apple Pencil, she creates elaborate patterns and illustrations to weave stories around her subjects. Her inspiration comes from her Indian heritage, her family, friends, and her lived experiences. Moorthy’s drawings are intended to spark hope, faith, and a sense of endless magical possibility. She illustrates the world around her—both seen and unseen.
