The Oakwood Chamber Players invite you to bridge the gap from the long, dark winter to eagerly-awaited springtime, with a musical program anchored in the present, yet informed by the past. Enjoy their palette of strings, woodwinds, and piano on Sunday, March 15, 2:00pm at Arts + Literature Laboratory.
“Century Dances,” a woodwind trio by British composer Cecilia McDowall (b. 1951), serves as a framework for the program, tracing a lineage of contrasting dance forms from the 18th century through the contemporary age. Prefaced by the quote, “I have only known love through the misfortune it causes,” Mikhail Glinka’s (1804-1857) “Trio Pathetique,” is a brooding work written for a heavier, darker combination of clarinet, bassoon, and piano. GRAMMY and Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962) beckons listeners to contemplate the ways light is reflected in humankind, in her work “Light Refracted” featuring clarinet, strings, and piano. Finally, audiences will get a taste of “Paris in the springtime” with the cheeky and eloquent “Quartet” for English horn and String trio by French composer Jean Françaix.
Oakwood Chamber Players serve as the professional resident ensemble for the Oakwood Village senior living community. Artistic Directors Valree Casey (oboe/English horn), Nancy Mackenzie (clarinet), Stacy Regehr (piano), Amanda Szczys (bassoon), Marie Pauls (viola), and Maggie Townsend (cello) will be joined by guest violinist Holly Wagner.
